What do former presidents Bill Clinton and Boris Yeltsin have in common? A condition called acne rosacea, a chronic inflammation of the blood vessels in the skin, which causes a ruddy complexion and small acne-like eruptions on the cheeks, forehead and nose.

In men it can often cause the skin on the nose to thicken and swell, leading toa condition called rhinophyma.

Nobody know what causes it but the list of potential triggers is endless. The main culprits are alcohol and rich, spicy foods.

Because its roots are unknown, there's no permanent cure either, so management is the key. This is partly achieved by identifying what makes the rosacea worse through a process of exclusion and by the use of topical antibiotics - usually metronidazole.

A GP's diagnosis is vital since the symptoms can be similar to more serious conditions such as lupus. Rosacea can last a lifetime, especially in men, but often clears up on its own.

There are many myths surrounding what causes acne. By educating yourself on how acne is formed you will be able to dispel most myths and learn how to effectively treat acne. First we should begin with a definition of acne. If you don't know what acne is, you can't hope to fight it.

Acne is found not only on the face, but also the neck, shoulders, back and chest. While it is not a life threatening disorder it can lead to embarrassing scarring. Acne is also the most common disorder in the United States today, affecting over 17 million people.

Acne is a disorder in which sebum (an oil produced in the sebaceous gland) is prevented from passing through the pore to the surface of the skin causing a clogged pore. This also prevents skin follicles from shedding properly causing eruptions in the skin called pimples.

Breakouts develop when this mixture of oil, skin cells and bacteria causing inflammation irritates the skin. When a pimple erupts, this mixture is spilled out onto the surrounding skin, which can cause it to become irritated and inflamed.

There are four main types of acne lesions, they are: papules, which are small pink bumps. Pustules, which are pus filled lesions that may be red at the base of the skin. The third type of lesion is a nodule, which is a large solid lesion deep within the skin. And finally, a cyst is a deep pus-filled lesion that causes scarring.

One of the biggest acne causing factors are hormones. Sex hormone levels rise when both boys and girls reach puberty. This causes your oil glands to enlarge and produce more sebum making it more likely that the pore will become blocked. Hormone levels also rise just before a female begins her monthly menstrual cycle. This is why girls are prone to breakouts 2-7 days before their period begins. Other hormonal changes in women also cause acne. This includes pregnancy and either starting or stopping birth control pills.

Another big factor that causes acne is genetics. It is now known that acne may be a genetic disorder, so if your parents suffered from severe acne at one point in their lives, most likely, you will as well.

One factor that causes acne to worsen is stress. For some reason, moderate to severe emotional tension aggravates acne. Other factors include environmental irritants like pollution and humidity, cosmetics that cause skin follicles to stick together and certain drugs like lithium.

If you already have acne and do not wish to make it worse you should refrain from picking and squeezing your pimples. Also relentlessly scrubbing your face will only irritate your skin causing acne breakouts to worsen. Acne is also worsened by friction. This friction may come from a bike helmet, backpack, or a tight collar.

Here are a couple myths surrounding the cause of acne. Acne is caused by chocolate or greasy, fatty foods. This is incorrect. While eating a healthy diet and drinking lots of water you may be able to improve your skin's appearance, eating a chocolate bar is not going to cause a zit to pop up the next day. Another myth is that having a dirty face causes acne. This is also incorrect because bacteria, sebum and blocked skin follicles, not dirt, cause acne.

It is hard to look at a pimple growing on your face or back and resist the urge to squeeze it. It is a fact, however, that improper picking will almost always increase the irritation by damaging skin tissue and causing secondary infection. Moreover, you are likely to give yourself a scar! In short, popping a pimple makes a bad situation worse. There are ways to alleviate pimple swelling without resorting to picking, but first it might be helpful to know what causes pimples.

When pores get clogged with sebum (dead cells and toxic chemicals caused by bacteria), pimples are born. As the debris increases, the pimple begins to swell, putting pressure on the skin and causing the redness and inflammation. The debris that gets trapped is what gives your pimple that icky yellowish look. When you squeeze the gunk out and if you do not do it carefully, you will spread the infection.

That is why it is critical to leave your face and your pimples alone! The small joy a pop will bring is not worth the secondary infections, the spreading and the scarring that it might cause. If you do not have the time or materials for a sterile cleaning, then do your best to resist touching and popping those pimples!

There are effective herbal remedies available and it might be worth your while to investigate some of them. Some work better than others, depending on the person, and they are safe and do not cause harmful side-effects. Some of them may give your relief from flare-ups and improve the look of your skin over the long haul.

One quick and easy technique to reduce swelling is the always-helpful ice pack. An ice pack gently applied to the affected area for two to three minutes, two or three times an hour ought to give you some improvement. Other useful remedies include toothpaste, which can reduce the redness, and apple cider vinegar, which is a natural astringent to reduce the swelling. Cucumber and tomato juices also tighten pores, reducing the appearance of swelling dramatically.

Less well-known, but effective treatments include sandalwood paste made with rose water and Australian Tea Tree Oil. Sandalwood paste reduces irritation so swelling is alleviated. Used long term, sandalwood paste also improves overall skin texture. This paste should be used all over as a face mask and left on for at least six to eight hours. If you can keep it on overnight, you will see great improvement. The Tea Tree Oil, on the other hand, acts as a very potent bactericide. Obviously, this helps with secondary infections by killing bacteria present on the surface of the skin.

Sometimes medicine is the answer. There are effective over the counter treatments that have benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid in them. For some acne sufferers, these are very effective in healing pimples quickly and preventing new ones by drying pus and soothing inflammation. Some people, however, may need stronger help in the form of prescription medicine. These are usually very safe and effective, so if you are a chronic sufferer, don�t hesitate to see a doctor.

As a long time sufferer from acne, I�ve spent some years looking into the different forms of acne skin care. One thing I�ve learned is there are about as many different forms of skin care as there are people looking for skin care. Everyone seems to have their own unique idea on ways to treat acne, or prevent acne from occurring in the first place.

The one thing I have learned about acne skin care is that your skin can be treated by ways other than topical products. Skin is a part of your body, and contrary to popular belief is very much alive, only the outermost layers of skin are �dead�. Taking good care of your health and yourself in general can therefore be a good method of skin care. This includes a healthy diet with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and frequent exercise, but most important I�ve found that keeping stress levels down makes a huge difference for me. My acne is like a stressometer, if I�ve got a lot on my plate I�m pretty much guaranteed to wake up in the morning with two or three new little friends.

So learning different techniques to keep stress levels down has proven to be the best acne skin care I�ve come up with, in that it prevents it from happening at all. What you decide to do to keep stress down is up to you, just make sure it�s not alcohol! Alcohol may help you relax, but its one of those culprits that can cause a lot of acne outbreaks for people. Limit the amount of caffeine that you consume as well. Stress isn�t just feeling pressured or tense, but also includes stress to your body that you don�t otherwise notice. Alcohol puts your body under stress, even if it makes you feel mentally at ease.

Of course, some acne just appears whether I�m stressed or not, so there�s always a need for some skin care beyond just healthy low stress living. As far as topical acne skin care treatments, I prefer using soaps that have either salicylic acid or benzyl peroxide in them. For years I was using benzyl peroxide soaps every day with some success, but I�ve recently discovered salicylic acid is just as effective in acne skin care for me.

I use one or the other every day whether I�m having outbreaks or not, and follow up washing my face and applying an skin care moisturizer that suits me and causes no side affects to my skin. This last part is key, as I�ve found that not using a moisturizer will often lead to outbreaks. Acne skin care soaps are often quite harsh, and can in themselves cause acne for me if I don�t follow up with something to sooth the cleaned skin.

Cosmetics, though by no stretch of imagination a valid line of defense, are widely used to camouflage acne. Though this is reasonable and makes sense, any kind of topically applied oil-based compound will aggravate acne. This especially applies to foundation creams, the longest-lasting of which are generally oil-based (or oleaginous).

Specifically, the ingredients to avoid include isopropyl myristate, isopropyl esters, oleic acid, stearic acid, petrolatum and lanolin. Cosmetic brands of lower quality will not mention the presence or absence of such compounds on the label and must be avoided. Though alcohol-based cosmetics are not the best choice for acne-prone skin, they are certainly preferable to oil-based ones. The best bets are water-based cosmetics which, though not as long-lasting as oleaginous ones, are far more suitable and less detrimental to acne.

There are a number of cosmetics available for camouflaging unsightly acne. They usually come in the form of a regimen that includes a concealing cream, a sheer or opaque foundation and a dusting powder. Prior to using these products, the skin must be gently but thoroughly cleansed and a certain amount of individual inventiveness may be called for to match camouflaged acne with unaffected skin areas.

A lot of research has been conducted to isolate the ideal shades of foundation creams for hiding acne, and you can now choose the shade that best suits the degree of acne you suffer from. For instance, green creams have been found most suitable for camouflaging redness resulting from rosacea. Yellow cream is best suited for purplish bruising and excessively pigmented skin (which can be caused by severe acne), and so on.

It is best to consult a knowledgeable salesperson attached to a reputed cosmetics outlet rather than pick up such �designer� products off the shelf at the local supermarket.

Acne: Asthma Drug Fails to Help Patients with Acne

The asthma drug Zyflo fails to help patients with severe acne, according to a mid-stage trial carried out by the company Critical Therapeutics Inc. The drug, also known as zileuton, was neither better at controlling the number of inflammatory lesions than placebos under the company statistics.

Over the 12-week trial, patients treated with Zyflo had an average reduction of 11.5 inflammatory lesions. That compared with a reduction of 9.1 lesions in a group of other patients taking placebos � far short of achieving statistical significance.

Patients treated with placebo showed a reduction of 16.4 lesions in the placebo group, but patients treated with Zyflo showed a mean reduction in the total number of lesions of 25.3.

The company stated the medicine showed a trend of potential benefit to some patients although the drug failed the primary goal of the trial.

Linda Lennox, the company spokeswoman, told the company will probably conduct a larger trial testing the medicine as an acne treatment, using information gleaned from the small recent "proof of concept" trial.

The company based in Lexington, Massachusetts, said that it is continuing to analyze the data and is working with the investigators to further interpret the results.

Zyflo blocks an inflammation-causing enzyme called 5 lipoxygenase (5-LO). It was approved by U.S. regulators in 1996 for treating asthma patients 12 years of age and older. At the time, the drug was owned by Abbott Laboratories Inc., which sold it for a number of years before licensing it to Critical Therapeutics in late 2003.
